Why eye contact is so powerful
Sustained mutual gaze is one of the clearest signals of interest between people. It's intimate, and it's hard to fake comfortably. A man who can hold a woman's gaze calmly signals confidence. A man who can't signals nerves.
Techniques
Hold one beat longer
When you catch her eye across a room, hold it a second longer than feels comfortable, then smile slightly and look away to the side.
Break sideways, not down
Looking down reads as submissive or shy. Looking to the side reads as unbothered.
The triangle gaze
Eye, other eye, lips, slowly. This is the "look at her mouth" trigger from the Hacking Attraction presentation. Use it sparingly once the conversation is warm. It quietly signals romantic interest. See attraction triggers.
Reading her eyes
Tao of Badass includes a section on reading eye movements to understand how a woman thinks, for example whether she's a visual thinker. These ideas come mainly from NLP "eye accessing cues." Be clear about the limits: research hasn't shown that eye direction reliably reveals lying. Use eye cues to tune into how she's processing a question, not to judge her honesty.
The more reliable read is simpler: is she returning your eye contact? That's one of the top signs she's attracted to you.
Frequently asked questions
How long should you hold eye contact with a woman?
Hold it a little longer than feels normal, a few seconds, then break it by looking to the side rather than down. Looking down can read as submissive. Constant staring without breaks feels intense, so mix it up.
Can you tell if someone is lying from their eye movements?
Not reliably. The idea that looking in certain directions reveals lying comes from NLP, and controlled studies haven't supported it. Eye cues can hint at whether someone is remembering or imagining, but treat them as conversation hints, not a lie detector.
